We’re looking for people who are committed in the fight against lung disease in Nova Scotia and are interested in serving as a Board member for LANS.
Mission Statement: The Lung Association of Nova Scotia (LANS) is a charitable health organization dedicated to improving quality of life by preventing and managing lung disease through research, advocacy, patient services and education.
Motto: When you can’t breathe…nothing else matters.
Vision: From our main office in Halifax, we serve all Nova Scotians with lung disease through help from our generous donors. Our focus is simple: offer the best programs and services in lung health, advocate for better lung health research and fund areas that directly help Nova Scotians breathe easier.
History: The Lung Association of Nova Scotia was established in the early 1900’s to control the spread of and prevent tuberculosis, a once deadly disease and number one killer of Canadians. With over 100 years of service to the community, the Lung Association of Nova Scotia continues to directly help people who live with lung disease.
The Board of Directors comprises of up to 12 members and is a governance/policy board. The Board is responsible for governing the organization that includes strategic planning, policy, financial oversight, and board self-management.

• Three year term that may be renewed for a further three years, pending renewal and approval by the board
• The board of directors meets September through June on the second Tuesday of the month, approximately five times per year from 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
• Meetings are held at the Lung Association of Nova Scotia, Halifax Office, 6331 Lady Hammond Rd.
• Committees of the board typically meet on a set schedule, either in person or by teleconference, according to their respective work agendas
Board Member Responsibilities:
• Actively participate in all matters of the board relating to good governance including strategic planning, financial oversight, policy setting, self-governance and oversight
• Attend all board meetings, Annual General Meeting and special events
• Be accessible for personal contact in between board meetings via email correspondence and phone calls
• Be committed to the work of LANS and knowledgeable about our services
• Be an advocate for the fight against lung disease in Nova Scotia
• Participate on a minimum of one board sub-committee
• Assist in fundraising activities
• Work as a team member by supporting the Board and the President & CEO
Nominations for 2017
The Board of Directors requires nominees who have many of the following skills:
• Previous Board experience in a Not-For-Profit
• A strong desire to make Nova Scotia a healthier place to live and breathe
• Specialties in:
o Government Relations
o Accounting/Financial Acumen
o Human Resources
