About the Smoke-free NOW Challenge

Nova Scotia has one of the highest smoking rates in the country and smoking is the leading cause of most lung-related health issues. At the Lung Association of Nova Scotia (LANS), we are committed to helping Nova Scotians breathe easier by taking a proactive approach to lung health.

The LANS is continuing its long-standing efforts to help Nova Scotians quit smoking. Since the inception of the Quit Cold Turkey challenge in 2015, we have served 1000 Nova Scotian smokers, with over a third of them successfully becoming smoke-free. The Quit Cold Turkey challenge has been the major way through which we directly support Nova Scotians in becoming smoke-free around Christmas time. However, we understand that with the COVID-19 pandemic, these are unprecedented times and Nova Scotians need us more than ever before. They need us now.

In response to this need, the LANS has developed “Smoke-Free NOW” challenge. We have one key message for Nova Scotian smokers: “the time to quit smoking is now.”  Given that smoking effects your chances for complications from COVID-19, the Lung Association of Nova Scotia is here for you during these difficult times. We are offering an opportunity for 100 Nova Scotian smokers to challenge themselves to become smoke-free for four weeks: from May 8 until June 5, 2020. Participants will receive weekly support emails.

Beginning at noon (12 p.m. AST) on May 8th, participants will give up smoking for four weeks.

When the challenge period ends at noon on June 5th and you have remained completely smoke-free (not even one puff) for 4 weeks, we will celebrate your achievement with a gift from our family to yours.

We will be giving out $30 worth of lobsters (or equivalent amount in the form of a gift card).

We understand that quitting smoking is hard, the LANS will stay in touch through weekly emails and Facebook posts to encourage you along the way. We have also assembled a wealth of supporting information available on the “Resources” page of this website.

Participants who complete the challenge and remain smoke-free will be asked to share their story with us so that we can celebrate their success and inspire others.
