Coronavirus: what you need to know

Coronavirus refers to a family of viruses that can cause illness ranging from the common cold to more serious respiratory disease. The new coronavirus, associated with the outbreak in the region of Hubei, China had not previously been found in humans.

The Public Health Agency of Canada has assessed the public risk to Canada and Canadian travellers as low.

If you are concerned and want to protect yourself and those around you ensure you:

  • wash your hands often
  • cover your mouth and nose when sneezing

If you have travelled to the affected region of Hubei, China and are experiencing fever, cough, and/or difficulty breathing Health Canada recommends that you speak to your health care provider.
